Promise, promise, that this will be my last post on Arizona. I just feel like the topic of restaurants and good food is always important when one is on vacation and miles away from home. We ate at three restaurants that I think are worth mentioning.
The first one is Pizzeria Bianco in Phoenix, next to the Arizona State Downtown Campus. Chris Bianco, the chef and owner, is a James Beard award recipient and a pioneer in the slow-food movement and artisan pizza. We ordered two pizzas, one with Italian sausage, caramelized onions and olives and another with salami, cheese and marinara sauce. They were just delectable and so fresh tasting!
The second restaurant is La Hacienda at the Fairmont Princess Hotel. The Mexican food at the restaurant has a modern flair and simply tasty. Personally, I thought the churros we had for dessert was the best I have ever tasted. They were on the fluffier side, not too dense , but very moist — not a good sign in terms of calorie intake but heck, we were on vacation.
The last restaurant is Barrio Cafe, owned by another award-winning chef, Silvana Esparza. I had the best cochinata pibil, pulled pork sandwich, here. Chef Silvana’s goal is to expose the public to real Mexican food so many of her dishes were inspired by her mom and grandmom’s cooking. The cool thing about Barrio Cafe is that its facade is surrounded by mural art from the Calle 16 initiative. Definitely a must-visit in Phoenix. It’s not that far from the airport so we stopped here before heading back home.
Hopefully this will inspire you eat some yummy grubs this weekend!
