Unlike her sister who celebrates her birthday four times a year, Chiara usually has pretty low-key birthday celebrations. She’ll celebrate it tomorrow with us and another time with some of her closest friends. For her, it’s the company of loved ones that’s important on her birthday, not the additional attention she gets.
As I reflect on her birthday and what it means to be 11, I cannot help but feel proud of my girl. She has shown maturity and compassion beyond her years even as a little girl. Underneath her quiet demeanor are tenacity and discipline that I would have loved to have had when I was her age. Despite the fact that she’s older now, I can always rely on a hug and kiss from her everyday.
One thing that no one tells us when we become parents is how we’ll emotionally react to our new roles as mothers and fathers. I suppose I had no idea how much I was going to fall in love with my daughters and motherhood. Yes, 11 years into this and I can say that I feel lucky to be a mother to my girls. Not everyday is easy and there will tough days ahead but when I take a step back and look at the big picture, I feel blessed.
